The deadline to file taxes is extended for certain areas!
The IRS issued a notice declaring that certain taxpayers in areas covered by FEMA declarations may have more time to file their returns.
Tax returns are typically due on April 15th, but extensions are granted to any who apply. These extensions allow taxpayers to delay filing their returns until Oct 17. It is always important to note that the extension only applies to your filing deadline but not to pay. You are still required to pay the taxes you owe on April 15, even if you file for an extension.
With the wave of recent natural disasters that have plagued the US, the IRS granted the following extensions:
Areas with a deadline of November 15, 2022, include:
Counties in Missouri identified under FEMA's Major Disaster Declaration 4665.
Counties in Kentucky identified under FEMA's Major Disaster Declaration 4633.
The island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Members of the Tribal Nation of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.
Areas with a deadline of February 15, 2023, include:
Florida,
Puerto Rico,
North Carolina,
South Carolina,
Areas in Alaska identified under FEMA's Major Disaster Declaration 4672 and
Hinds County, Mississippi.
This relief applies to individual and business returns. For more details, check out the notice from the IRS here.
